Raja Kumbang. My Theories, Thoughts and Practicalities…

Men die younger..

Scientists have proven that statistically, men die younger.

Is it because guys work harder?

Or we stress ourselves too much? Much more that womenfolk do?

What is your take?

I offer a few reasons in the photos below (taken somewhere off the net).

Hope this gives you some insight into the matter.

Well, I guess that proves it.

Men only have balls so women can pull it around any which way they want.

Eyeballs, that is….

quote of the day:

“If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.” (Bruce Lee)

Some people asked me why I’m called “Raja Kumbang”.

Well, if you know the song, and you know me intimately, maybe you’ll have an idea why.

Hei jangan cuba-cuba = Hey, dont even try

Bermain cinta denganku = Playing games of love with me

Oh aku Raja Kumbang = Oh, I am the Beetle King

Itu nama samaranku = That is my nickname

Jangan cuba menekan diriku = Don’t try to push me

Untuk kepuasanmu = For your own satisfaction

Hidupku selalu berkelana = My life is always a-wandering

Mencari bahagia = Searching for happiness

Oh hidup bagaikan burung = Oh, life is like a bird

Tersiksa dalam sangkarnya = Tortured in its cage

Oh lebih baik hidup = Oh, it is better to live

Bagaikan kumbang yang merdeka = just like a bettle that is free

Cinta bagiku hanyalah seperti debu = Love to me is only just like dust

Pasti hilang bersama angin yang lalu = Will definitely disappear with the passing breeze

thought of the day:-

HEAVEN & HELL

The old monk sat by the side of the road. With his eyes closed, his legs crossed and his hands folded in his lap, he sat. In deep meditation he sat.

Suddenly his zazen was interrupted by the harsh and demanding voice of a samurai warrior. “Old man! Teach me about heaven and hell!”

At first, as though he had not heard, there was no perceptible response from the monk. But gradually he began to open his eyes, the faintest hint of a smile playing around the corners of his mouth as the samurai stood there, waiting impatiently, growing more and more agitated with each passing second.

“You wish to know the secrets of heaven and hell?” replied the monk at last. “You who are so unkempt. You whose hands and feet are covered with dirt. You whose hair is uncombed, whose breath is foul, whose sword is all rusty and neglected. You who are ugly and whose mother dresses you funny. You would ask me of heaven and hell?”

The samurai uttered a vile curse. He drew his sword and raised it high over his head. His face turned to crimson, and the veins of his neck stood out in bold relief as he prepared to sever the monk’s head from its shoulders.

“That is hell,” said the old monk gently, just as the sword began its descent.

In that fraction of a second, the samurai was overcome with amazement, awe, compassion and love for this gentle being who had dared to risk his very life to give him such a teaching. He stopped his sword in mid-flight and his eyes filled with grateful tears.

“And that,” said the monk, “is heaven.”

Coming outta nowhere…

Tonight I’ll be playing with my project band, Shallow Blue at Top 5.

Not that I’m not psyched about it, I am, but I’m just frikkin’ tired and exhausted.

Wise chinese sage says: Man who runs in front of car get tired, man who run behind car get exhausted.

Guess where I was..

Anyway, yesterday Azhar and I went to accompany Boy S (Nakalistik/ Still Here 17/ Crazy Doctors) , Mamat Skodeng, Fit (Crazy Doctors) and Fran (Awie punya orang kuat) for their jamming session, which lasted until the wee hours of the morning. They’re playing under the moniker “Dubious”. I only had like a few hours of sleep. Gotta wake up early and refresh my memory. I don’t want to stumble over the lyrics.

We’re the second band up. First is Silver Tears fronted by Ace. After us is Terabo (yes, the same Terabo that is in the top 20 for Anugerah Band) then Dubious.

We’re just the openers.

The main event’s line up is Jatt Ali, Faizal (House of Rock), Hanafie Warren and Awie Wings.

Oh, did I mention that Alias Kadir will be singing too?

Should be a blast, though.

Let’s Rock!

I don’t have much time for much of a post.

Gotta go out soon, it’ll be a busy day today. Tomorrow too.

Cos tomorrow I’ll be playing at Top5 at Orchard Towers, with the band, Shallow Blue, which is just me, Jas (my neighbor from upstairs), Amin (my neighbor from the next block) and AoD (neighbor from 2 blocks away).

Our slot is aroud 7pm. There’ll be around 4 bands playing 3 songs each. After that is the main event, which is Awie, Hanafi Warren and a few local artists. Mostly everyone will be playing 70’s rock classics, cos it’s the theme of the day.

As for us, we’ll be playing Burn by Deep Purple, Starstruck by Rainbow and Medicine Man by Whitesnake. Rock Steady by Bad Company on standby.

Gotta move!

Rock On.

Someone asked me about life and what’s the meaning of life. So I said:

Life is a series of situations, transcending from one to another, regardless of direction.
We are always in a state of transition. Even if it’s in a circle, it is always in motion.

Like a river, always in a constant state of flux.

Like a river which ultimately ends in a calm lake or joined to the sea, such is our lives, a journey meandering, pushing forth, urging on, stumbling over rocky circumstances, dammed up and held in check, sluicing along like little rivulets, spilling our essence here and there.

All in pursuit of the ultimate goal.

Water.
Everywhere.
Wide and vast yet still and calm.
Light of the sun bounces of it’s shimmering surface.
A warm breeze stirs up gentle little waves.

Peace.

With oneself? Or with the world and everyone in it? What is one’s choice?
Methinks, it is up to each one of us, to decide for ourselves.

That didn’t actually answer the question, but I like to think that it gives a different perspective on life.

My band didn’t make it thru the second round of Anugerah Band. Well, as malays say, rezki masing-masing (to each his own, in a sense). There were a whole lotta great bands, most of them rockers (rock melayu habis) but only 20 outta 68 got thru to the next round. Too bad my band NV didn’t make it. Guess we weren’t rock enough. Cucu Datuk Merah did make it though. Rock on, CDM! Gua support, lah!

Anyway, I’m thinking of starting a new blog. No, not for ramblings, rantings or ruminations.

It will have a more… practical approach.

I got to thinking the other day, about being married, having kids and all that schmuck. Then I got to thinking about how I would try to support my family, financial concerns and safety and all that.

When I have kids, I’m gonna teach ‘em some self-defence, or martial arts, whichever their preference. I don’t really believe in most of the commercial stuff in the market. Having been thru quite a few of what they sell as “martial arts” here and going thru rough spots in life and perilous situations, a lotta what they sell don’t really work or even stand the first hit. So I’m thinking, hey I gotta dump all I know right now somewhere, in case I get too old to remember ‘em and impart ‘em on my kids. So I thought, hey, why not a blog, right?

Yeah, good idea, but I need someone to assist me in taking the pictures for the techniques though. Also need someone to pose the moves with. Aiyoh.. so troublesome.

Intelligence. Character. Tilde.

Intelligence and character – that is true education.

Talking about character, did you know that the malay slang term “kerek” (which means stuck up) was actually derived from the term “character”?

Hmm… what other words are there?

Obit (pronounced awe-bit): defined as weird or not normal, out of the ordinary; I.e, a person wearing a black tuxedo with neon green shoes. Derived from the term “off-beat”

Gohed (pronounced go-head): to go forward especially when driving. From the english term “go ahead”.

Gostan (pronounced go-stun): to reverse especially when driving. From the engilsh term “go astern”.

Gerek (pronounced gay-rake): A bastardisation of the word “great”. Used in the same way as it holds the same meaning (i.e, Sarah’s dancing is gerek!) but it has connotations of wanting to participate and feeling enthused.

Shoik (pronounced shock): An equivalent of “gerek” but is usually used to express extreme satisfaction especially with regards to food and other pleasures. Derived from the word “shock”, but has no relative correlation with its actual definition.

Spoting (pronounced s-paw-TING): A bastardisation of the word “sporting”. Used in the same way as it holds the same meaning but it has connotations of open-mindedness and disregard to norms and authorities.

A recent addition to the malay slang repertoire is the term “kon”.

Kon (pronounced cawn): defined as cheating, to lie, but with good intentions; i.e. Telling mom that you’re at a friend’s place when you’re actually helping your girlfriend with her maths homework. Derived from the term “connive”.

Those are just a fe of the malay vernacular that I could write off the top of my head just this moment. There’s a lot more, but I’m too lazy to think about them.

Just finished practicing with my band just now. We’re getting pumped up for the 2nd round of Anugerah Band this Sunday.

Wish us luck.

Wish I was rich. Haha~

Oh, in case you don’t know, the “~” sign is called a “tilde” (Say TILL-DAY. Visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilde to know what it is).

On your keyboard, it’s the key to the left of number 1.

No, not the one on the right, the left one. To the left.

To the left to the left. All your things in a box to the left…

Watery Fate. Shit Happens.

Had a few hours practice just now with the band.

Fun song to play, even though it’s cut short to just 3 min (to fit the maximum time allocated for the competition).

An original composition by Raffi.

Ever wondered why your life is the way it is?

Is there such a thing as fate? Is your life already set in stone, or is it like the flow of a river, which can meander and be redirected, or dammed up and stored.

I think it’s a bit of both.

Take the river analogy for example.

Sure you can change the direction, dam it up, split it of join multiple rivulets into a bigger river or lake, but there are principles that you need to follow.

1: Water flows from a higher point to a lower point.

Ever heard about a river that ran up a hill or mountain? Yeah? Neither did I.

Some things in life, especially yours, can’t be changed. You can’t bring back a dead person. You can’t change who your parents are, or make your past a happier or more eventful one. You have to take it all in and move on. Like water does. You just can’t swim back upstream and start again on a different path.

2: Water follows the path of least resistance.

Ever seen water drill thru a big rock a river? Didn’t think so. Why waste time when you can go around it? It’s like politely asking n elephant to step aside so you can pass, which is kinda dumb if you could just walk a few paces to the side and carry on.

Though it may be possible to bore a hole thru the above-mentioned metaphorical rock, one has to admit, it will definitely take a much longer time than taking the simple (and more logical) route. That’s something most people nowadays forget.

3: Water goes with the flow.

Like… duh…

Not neccessarily following the masses, but if almost everyone is running away from a 200 feet tall reptile in the middle of town, should you do any different? Or if everyone is picking up gold nuggets from your local monsoon drain to sell to dealers for wads of cash, would you do any different? It’s not about groupthink or mob-mindset or stuff like that, but never understimate the masses. And it’s also not a good idea to go up against them. Picture a KKK activist in full white regalia right smack in the front stage area during a 50cent concert. You’ll get the idea.

So.. what about life?

It’s like that.

Shit happens.

Shit always happen.

Shit always happen for a reason.

But we don’t really know what it is.

Picture this:

You’re on a road (metaphorically, it’s your path in life), it’s your road, maybe yours alone or one you share with another or a few people in life. Suddenly you find a pile of shit in front of you, blocking your way and rendering you unable to move forward. Sometimes you can sidestep it. Sometimes you can go over it, or even under it. Maybe even heap some dirt over it to cover it up so you could walk over it (ewww..), but let’s say that in this instance, you can’t do all of those things.

So what do you do?

Let’s ruminate..

When shit happens, you need to remove it. You can’t just stay put and contemplate on whether what you’re looking at is shit or is not-shit. You need to identify the shit.

If it’s really shit, then you need to remove the shit, but you can’t just pick it up with your bare hands so you need the tools, proper ones, to remove the shit.

Before you even use the shit removing tools, you need to learn how to use the shit removing tools.

Once you’ve already done that, then you can proceed with the removing of the shit.

Then you can carry on with your life.

Shit = Problems, difficulties, troubles, doubts, etc..

shit removing tools = Logical reasoning, rational procedures, relevant methods, result specific and consequentially defined approach.
